Saudi Arabia has updated its rules for female pilgrims. Here is what women need to know about performing Umrah in 2026 — including the mahram question, travelling alone, and practical guidance.
Do women need a mahram for Umrah?
No. Women of any age can now perform Umrah without a male guardian (mahram). This applies whether you travel on the Saudi tourist eVisa or a dedicated Umrah visa. Women may travel individually or as part of an organised group.
This is a significant relaxation of the earlier rule, which required women under a certain age to be accompanied by a mahram.
Documents and requirements
The requirements for women are the same as for all pilgrims: a passport valid for at least six months, a passport photo, return flights, accommodation and proof of meningococcal ACWY vaccination.
Practical guidance for female pilgrims
There is no specific dress colour required for Umrah — women wear modest clothing that covers the body, and the face and hands may remain uncovered during the pilgrimage. Many women choose to travel with a group for convenience and companionship, but this is a personal choice, not a requirement.
